On Friday 25th November 2005 at 12:55 PM GMT, Footballing Legend George Best died in Hospital at the age of 59 after suffering multiple organ failure. He died after a long and grueling fight, with an illness, which stemmed from an infection in his kidney. This has all resulted due to a long suffering drinking problem, that has plagued him for the majority of his life. Best helped Manchester United win the First Division title in 1965 and 1967 and the European Cup in 1968. His role in the team's success was recognised by his becoming the European Footballer of the Year in 1968. |

George Best was born on the 22nd May 1946 in Belfast. At the age of 15, George Best was discovered by Manchester United scout Bob Bishop. He made his debut for Manchester United in 1963 at the age of sixteen. He made 466 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions, scoring 178 goals. In 1974, the 27-year-old Best was sacked by United for excessive drinking and persistent failure to attend training sessions and matches. Over the next decade, Best drifted between several football clubs until he finally retired from the game in 1984 at the age of 38. He was capped 37 times for Northern Ireland, scoring nine goals. He played mainly as a winger and was known for his dribbling skills and passing. George Best was the first real football superstar. He became a playboy and was addicted to the celebrity lifestyle that his charm and good looks, as well as his football earned him. He started his own fashion range that proved to be successful for a while. The celebrity lifestyle that he soon was addicted to, proved to be the downfall to his career. |

Georgie was most well know to Manchester United Fans for his talent on the field rather than off of it. His ability both off and on the ball as well as his creative flair, made him a superstar over night. Most supporters will remember the goal he scored where he was scythed down by 'Chopper' Harris, where stated up after the tackle and rounded the goal keeper to score. Also, he helped United to win European Cup in 68', against Benfica. He scored the all important second goal to give Manchester United their first ever European Cup victory.
George had a talent for scoring great goals. He could mesmerize anybody who watch him, as well as make world class defenders look like amateurs. One thing about george was that he truly is a Legend. Due to an obsession with alcohol, George damaged one of his kidneys. He was forced to have a kidney transplant to help save his life. This operation was successful and he was given a second chance.
He then tried to stop drinking alcohol, during his marriage to his newest Wife Alex. In the end, it all proved too much to him and he started to drink again. It was from this that he became ill again. He was taken to hospital where he stayed for a total of eight weeks before the doctors could do no more for him. He made have died from an early age, but to millions of people throughout the world he will always be a Legend and stay with us in our hearts. Good bye Georgie Boy we are all gonna miss you.
